Even though DoorDash claims you could use anything from a vehicle to as little as bicycles, we’ve seen them being selective at the locations most of these options are available.
As a matter of fact, cars are the only generally accepted mode of delivery on the platform.
So what if you intend to use a bicycle to dash? How can you tell if your location does support bicycles?
For some people, there should be a list of cities DoorDash approves for bicycles…but is this actually the case? Let’s take a quick look at this.
Is there an Official list of DoorDash bicycle cities?
First thing, to be clear, there are no released cities where bicycle deliveries are active on DoorDash nor does the platform maintain a public, up-to-date list of all its bicycle-friendly cities.
The rationale is pretty simple: the service is constantly evolving.
Today’s operational city could see changes based on demand, local regulations, or logistical concerns. This is one reason why hotspot locations sometimes aren’t as busy as expected — business evolves, and so does people’s demand.
So, rather than a set-in-stone list, what DoorDash provides is more fluid and adaptive.
But can we make a solid guess?
Yes, we can.
We know that bicycle delivery services are usually common in densely populated urban areas where it makes the most logistical sense.
High traffic, shorter delivery distance, etc, are some of the reasons bicycles are very much applicable here and could be more effective than cars depending on the location.
Some of these cities include big names like New York City, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Toronto, among others. We’ll talk properly about them in the next section.
But what if your city is not in this list?
The truth is we can’t tell, but you can.
An easy way to do this is to check the Dasher signup page.
After putting in your preferred delivery address, you should get to a page where you can choose your mode of delivery.
If you can’t find bicycles as a mode of delivery, DoorDash isn’t currently accepting bicycle drivers at your location. This approach is also applicable to dashers who intend walking as a delivery method.
10 Cities DoorDash Accepts Bicycle Drivers
Without much ado here is a list of 10 verified cities in the US where DoorDash accepts bicycle drivers:
- New York City, New York
- San Francisco, California
- Washington, D.C.
- Los Angeles, California
- Chicago, Illinois
- Seattle, Washington
- Denver, Colorado
- Portland, Oregon
- Austin, Texas
- Boston, Massachusetts
Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list. As we said earlier, there’s no comprehensive list of bicycle cities for DoorDash. You can only tell when you check.
It’s also worth mentioning that these cities may be subject to change if demands, policies, etc, change as time goes on.
However, we’ll try our best to keep you guys updated.
Are some cities better than others for bicycle delivery?
Yes, some cities do better than others for bicycle drivers.
This is also not exclusive to bicycle drivers but covers other modes of delivery as well.
Firstly, as we said earlier, densely populated areas usually work well for bicycle deliveries.
This is because bicycles are a better alternative during heavy traffic and congestion, as they can easily take alternate routes, and at best never actually experience traffic jams.
If you’re “unlucky” to get into a low-dense location with a bicycle, you’re likely to suffer from issues like long-distance deliveries, low delivery requests, and a generally lower delivery priority, as these are naturally the norm there.
But it would be a big disadvantage to you since you dash with a bicycle.
In other words, if you intend to cycle for DoorDash, avoid these locations….if you can.
If you can’t, there are other delivery modes to consider out there. I’m a big fan of scooters. If you can’t purchase one, give rentals a trial.
Regardless, as I always say, “You can’t assume until you get there.”
If you’ve not tried doing delivery with bicycles in your location, you can’t tell whether it’s going to be profitable or not without actually testing.
You can only make assumptions that are not always right in the delivery industry.
Lastly, one other thing to keep in mind in relation to better cities to dash with bicycles is their compatibility with bicycles, although less significant.
For instance, Hilly cities like the one we have in San Francisco or Seattle can sometimes be a sort of challenge compared to places like Berlin or Chicago with usually flat terrains.
It’s never something you can’t manage though, but worth mentioning.
Final Thoughts
While there isn’t an official list of cities from DoorDash on their bicycle cities, from our theory, you can make a solid guess and most importantly, check it for yourselves if you wish to.
